Metadata

Volunteer Voices is using the MODS metadata scheme.

Metadata Terminology

· MODS: Metadata Object Descriptive Schema

· Metadata: usually refers to a record structure used to catalog digital objects, although MARC and EAD are also considered metadata schemas.

Why Volunteer Voices is using MODS:

· MODS---

· allows for richer and more granular catalog records.

· allows for a large number of access points, browsing areas, specific searches.

· is a flexible schema, with all top-level elements optional and repeatable.

· allows the addition of local components, adding to the number of access points.

· The XML structure allows MODS records to be fed into a variety of meta-search engines.

· is a Library of Congress standard and encourages the use of authority files and cataloging standards. It also offers catalogers the choice of which authority files to define for use.

Volunteer Voices Metadata Creation

· Volunteer Voices is creating metadata through a web-based applications, AdminDB and the Workbook

· The web-based creation of the MODS records means that the cataloger never has to see the XML coding. It is very user-friendly!

· A link to the Administrative database is available at: http://www.volunteervoices.org/links/
